What an amazing, awe inspiring story. Makes me want to drop everything and go find myself- in a tent- on a mountain- with coyotes howling. A good read for sure.
Strayed's book is both a physical and spiritual journey. Her writing is easy, her flashbacks to the life that brought her to hiking the Pacific Coast Trail (with no prior experience) well timed, logically placed, and told with a balance between detachment and emotion that keeps the reader focused on the process she undergoes to figure out who she is rather than dwelling on that past.
Strayed writes well about the people she meets, the obstacles she faces, and the life she been living that threatened to overwhelm her. Her descriptions are excellent and she captures the uniqueness of those who populated her world - both past and on the trail.
The one flaw of the book was that some of the metaphors of her journey were overdone or obvious. Despite this, I found I admired her for taking such a step to reorient herself in life.
Couldn't put it down!
I have 2 young kids and have recently lost 60 pounds so this book spoke to me in many different ways! She is so brave and this book tells her story so well you can see if happening in front of you. Very well done! A must read!
Just what I needed, in this moment, as I grieve the lost of my mother who also crossed the river too soon. Thank you.

Not what i expected
Not an extraordinary story , monotonous, nothing different than any other cross country or hiking novels , surprising it's getting good reviews , bored to death.
This book should not even have a one star rating! It falls into the category of too good to be true or better yet too horrible to be true… I have never read a more unbelievable account of a single woman's traveling alone. If all her sexual escapades were as she wrote in this book the last thing she should do is be writing about them. We have so many young women in this world who have destroyed their lives doing less. Which is why I just don't believe her. I don't believe she ever went on this trip I don't believe she knows the first thing about hiking in the outdoors. Having done it myself for years I know for certain that no woman this reckless would have come out unscarred never mind giddy and laughing about it. Thoughtless and disappointing book.
