  • Outcome given at the start but the end leaves you hanging

    I don’t usually enjoy books that tell the outcome at the beginning. The reader knows from the outset that the kids are killed by the nanny. In this book, that’s not even a spoiler. But the book is well written and I very much wanted to know the “why?” and the effect on the parents. Sorrow? Guilt? Relief? I hung in until the last word, only to realize I had no more insight than I had at the beginning. I think this author has great potential but someone, perhaps the editor, should have worked on the ending.

    This novel was eery from the first pages, engrossing, and heartbreaking. The nanny is at once loathsome and loving. How? That’s the power of this uber-talented novelist. I did not want this fast-paced story to end.

    Apparently this version was translated from the original French version. It shows. But not the fault of the author. Compelling story. Do we ever really know the "strangers" in our daily lives? 😳

    The book kept my interest but I kept waiting for more insight into the characters and then it just ended. Bought the paperback for my mom yesterday but will return it.
